IMAGING APPROPRIATENESS MODULES
for Residents and Medical Students

About this site

Overutilization of medical imaging is a major factor responsible for both healthcare cost and radiation exposure. Recognizing the complexity of imaging that has resulted from advances over the past 50 years, the ACR American College of Radiology (ACR) created Appropriateness Criteria® (AC), evidence based guidelines that communicate the relative utility of various imaging tests for a range of clinical indications. Physicians who order imaging examinations, however, have not fully embraced this resource and published reports indicate that the majority of medical students are unfamiliar with ACR Appropriateness Criteria.

The purpose of this module is to introduce all medical students to ACR Appropriateness Criteria® and Choosing Wisely® imaging-related recommendations, to increase awareness of the importance of selecting the correct imaging exam for each patient and avoiding overutilization of imaging. The modules are short by design. Rather than attempting to provide a comprehensive resource that covers all of the imaging appropriateness guidelines for each specialty, the goal is to ensure that all future providers use appropriateness criteria to guide their imaging decision making. We urge all medical educators to integrate educational resources into the 3rd year of medical education, and as such, this resource is made available at no cost.
